Maternity Fashion do’s and don’ts

When it comes to having a new baby sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves.  We’re so excited about all the new baby things that we forget as Mom’s we could use a few new things too.  One of the main things we tend to forget about, fashion.  Seriously though, who out there actually likes maternity fashion?  Moo-moo’s for months on end? UGH!

Maternity fashion can actually be cute and stylish. Trust me, I didn’t believe either until last week.   Now of course this being my second child I’ve learned there are a few do’s and don’ts to maternity fashion.

Through out my 1st pregnancy I basically just bought larger sizes rather than going out and actually purchasing maternity clothing.  Because of this, I spent my whole pregnancy incredible uncomfortable, looking like I was wearing moo-moo’s and other unflattering outfits.  I was constantly tugging at my pants or pulling my tops down.  I felt like I wanted hide in my house for the whole pregnancy.

I refuse to make the same mistakes twice!  Today I’m going to share a few of my favorite Maternity Fashion Do’s and Don’ts.

Don’t

Don’t think you can get by just wearing non-maternity clothing in larger sizes.   This is only going to add to the list of reasons you’re uncomfortable!

Do

Do go out and buy maternity clothing that actually fit you. This may mean trying on a few things, but  invest in a couple of really good pieces.  This doesn’t mean you have to spend a million dollars on a new wardrobe that you’ll only be wearing for 6 months.  Check the consignment stores around you.  Also, know that once you’re done with your maternity clothing, you to can take it to the consignment stores and recoup some of your investment.

Don’t

Don’t hide your curves or that belly.  Trust me, I know it’s tempting!!

Do

Do show off your curves!!!  You’re only going to have that belly for a little while, why not just show it off?   Show off your shape with ruche and wrap styles that enhance your curves. Buy clothing that will grow with your bump.

These super cute tops and dress can be purchased at Isabella Oliver.

Don’t

Don’t give up on jeans once you can’t get them to button anymore.

Do

Do invest in a good pair of Maternity Jeans.  You could wear a quality pair of jeans almost daily!  Again, you don’t have to break the bank.  Consignment stores are a great place to buy and sell your designer maternity jeans.

Some of my favorite brands

Lucky Jeans

AG Jeans

Citizens of Humanity

Don’t

Don’t stop trying to look nice!  You may not feel attractive anymore, but that’s no reason to throw in the towel.

Do

Do treat yourself to a mani/pedi every now and then.  Not only should you do your hair every morning, but go get it done professionally once in awhile.  Put on a little make up everyday.  Actually splurge on some new colors.  Feel good about yourself!

I always hate the about me section. I’m so many different things, I’m never sure how to narrow it down into a paragraph or 2. I love taking pictures, dancing in my living room, talking, I really love talking, and Traveling. I’m an Ex NFL Cheerleader, a “first wife” and now a first time mommy with a beautiful little girl. My life is far from boring and though there are times I long for boring, in the end I’d have it no other way!

Great post! When I was preggers with the twins, it was also my 3rd pregnancy, and I refused to wear maternity clothes unless I absolutely had to (like jeans). Fortunately, the styles for non-preggers peeps was pretty complimentary to maternity needs, and I just bought bigger sizes. For example, the Juicy Swimdresses in an L got me through the whole summer, and lululemon in 10s and 12s also worked well! Congrats to you! I’m sure you look fabulous!

  2. It seeems maternity is so much more stylish from even when i was pregnant 3 years ago! I held ontO all of the clothes ( except the maternity jeans cause they never fit) but i bet ill dump half of them when im pregnant again.

  3. Back when I was preggers with my kids (they’re 18 & 21), the styles were so unflattering. I love how these styles celebrate beautiful curves.

  4. I’m pregnant with my 3rd and although I have kept all of my clothes from my first two pregnancies, I feel like the styles change so quickly with maternity clothes. However, showing off the belly and curves definitely hasn’t changed over the past few years.

I never think to check out consignment stores for maternity clothes. Definitely going to do that!! Great post!

  5. I think maternity clothes are very comfortable for pregnant women. If you are looking for comfort and style on a budget when choosing your maternity clothes, you should strongly consider picking up a couple of pairs of maternity leggings. Maternity tights might be more suitable for dressier offices or nights on the town, but leggings will look great with most of your day-to-day maternity outfits.
