Towards the end of my pregnancy my husband and I started to panic about all the baby items we didn’t have. We spent the week before rushing around gathering up what we thought we needed. So many items I bought were just CRAP! My high chair and my diaper bin being the WORST!
This story is about my crappy, literally, diaper pail.
My husband I bought a Dekor XL Diaper Pail for $89!!
I know! $89? But, it promised so much! Ease of use, lack of smell and convenient adjustable bag sizes. It all sounded so good at the time.
That was until those tiny infant diapers turned into big smelly poopy diapers. The pail would start to smell up our 1200 sqft condo with in a few hours. I tried those diaper disks, but that didn’t help much. I eventually started to double bag those smelly puppies.
After about 2 months of use, the pedal that lifted the lid broke. Which means that I had to juggle baby, dirty diaper, and try to open the lid with out getting poop all over the place. I failed on many occations.
Oh, that those convenient adjustable bags?
You had pull the bag down and then cut it on a very sharp knife device. This knife thing, was actually attached to the diaper bin. SCARY!
Then you had to tie the full bag to close it and then the bottom of the new bag to seal the bottom. Pain in the butt!!!
Oh and we could never find the refills anywhere.
Wow, I’m feeling much better after that little vent session. I didn’t realize I was hold onto so much anger of a diaper pail.
So now that Ellie is three and no longer wearing diapers I’m introduced to a good diaper pail. And for less than 1/2 the price of the Dekor! This one is only $29!!!!
Munchkin and Arm & Hammer have teamed to up create a diaper pail that is preferred 2-to-1 over the Diaper Genie® II by Playtex.
The bags are easy to load, and tossing dirty diapers is quick and easy. The patented self-sealing system tightly seals the bag and locks odors away, while the Arm & Hammer® baking soda cartridge safely absorbs odors and dispenses natural baking soda each time the lid is closed.
Changing the bag…
Snap, Seal, and Toss!
Here comes the fun part!

I tried Diaper Genie I and II with my first child and with more than two diapers in them they started to stink…when we had our second baby, the first wasn’t even two yet so we had BOTH of them in diapers! I was seriously up to my ears in dirty diapers, especially when hubs had to leave for a month when the baby was just a couple weeks old…the diapers were everywhere, there were just two many to use the pail because it wasn’t convenient enough. We started our own ‘diaper pail system’ of putting them in grocery bags and tossing them out the back door and at then end of the day scooping up like 50 individual bags of poop and pee and tossing them into the outside trash!
If arm and hammer and Munchkin have solved my dilemma then I MUST have one!

We started out with a Genie that a friend passed down, only to find out that it was defective, and never worked right in the first place…it took us a week to finally throw in the towel, and just use a regular waste basket…we had to be diligent about taking them out, or it would get pretty smelly pretty fast. After a few months, another friend passed down a Diaper Champ….LOVED IT. We could use our own bags, no cutting the bag, no twisting and tying…but soon, we learned that it wasn’t a good fit, either. The original Diaper Champ had a rather small opening, and once you move up in size of dipe and size of….um…duty, it was a challenge to get it to go in , spin it, and then knock the diaper back out the bottom side, into the bag. Sometimes, I had to use my fist to push the center down to empty it, which grossed me out. I would wipe it down regularly, but it held odor like nobody’s business, and even with charcoal in the bottom, it made me gag every time I had to open it to change it. I started out changing it every night, which then turned into twice a day, and finally, I was over it, and we just started tossing them in our regular trash again, and set the Champ aside to donate or give away. We take our regular trash out every evening, and now we have one less can to empty and scrub down at the end of the day.
Just about 2 months ago, my brother and his wife were in the midst of moving, and stayed with us for a week, with their newborn baby. Little did I know, the entire time they were staying with us, she was tossing the dipes into the Champ, in a corner, with NO BAG IN IT. After they left, and a few days had passed, we were scouring the house, looking for the dead animal causing the raunchy odor. We thought maybe one of our toddlers had taken a yucky dipe off and put it somewhere, so we questioned our kids, scoured some more, and sanitized EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. Still, we couldn’t combat the stench, and every day, it got a little worse. Finally, nearly a full week later, I happened to be bagging up our baby items to pass down to a friend, and LOW AND BEHOLD, my head was RIGHT THERE, next to the Champ. I nearly died on the spot. 5 minutes later, I was fishing out poopy dipe after poopy dipe, and bleaching the heck out of the Champ, in hopes of ridding the odor. It still smelled. So, I left some bleach in it, sprayed it with some deodorizer, and set it in the direct sunlight on my back patio for an entire week. AHHHH! Stench resolved.
They came to visit 2 weeks later, for a long weekend. The Champ was in the corner by the back door. By the 2nd day, the raunchy smell was back…so I checked. Sure enough, it was already being filled with fresh stinky dipes. I promptly bagged them, and tossed them out, and asked her if she’d like to take the diaper pail home. I’d offered it to her in the past, but she’s registered for the latest and greatest version of the Genie. It never got purchased. So, off went the Champ, that weekend, in the back of their car…off to their house, where they will make use of it until they can stand the odor no more.
And OUR dipes…now, they go in the regular trash can, and get taken out daily.
I’m going to have to say E…after my nightmares with ours, I definitely know that all of those things AND MORE, might have happened during your challenge with your diaper pail!

I don’t really have a nightmare story. I just hated the diaper genie we had.
